#StayAtHome TIPS: How To Store Vegetables And Fresh Produce In A Long-Term Period
Handy Guidelines
Hello Foodies! Due to Covid-19, the government insists that only one person can leave the house to buy necessities. And a majority of households need to stock up on vegetables to cook at home. If you’re worried that fresh greens and produce will sag and go to waste, there are actually a few great ways to keep the vegetables fresh and last longer. Each vegetable has its own type and storage method. Keep scrolling as we’re about to tell you these useful tips!
A Guide To Long-Term Produce Storage
1. Cook Leafy Vegetables First
When it comes to vegetables, make sure we cook those leafy greens the first or second day after grocery shopping day. This way, you’ll avoid any wastages leafy greens often have a shorter lifespan compared to other kinds of vegetables.
2. Do Not Wash The Vegetables If You Want To Keep Them In Refrigerator
Don’t wash any vegetables and only wash prior to using them. But if you want to wash any, you can go ahead, just make sure you wipe them dry before storing them in the refrigerator.
3. Line Storage Container With Paper Towels
The main thing you need to prepare for this storage system is kitchen towels, ziplock bags, and Tupperware. All you need to do is layer the bottom and top of ziplock bags and Tupperware with some kitchen towels.
4. Keeping Tomatoes Out Of The Fridge
If you’d think that all fresh produce should go straight into the fridge then you may be wrong, for tomatoes at least. You can just leave them on the counter in your kitchen and place their stems facing down – slowing down the ripening process.
5. Soaking Carrots In Water
A total opposite from the tomatoes, carrots thrive in moisture! So, you can place them in a container filled with water and seal it up with plastic wrap before stashing them in the fridge. This will easily make your carrots last for weeks on end.
6. Onions In Your Stockings
A fairly odd but helpful way of keeping your onions fresh for long is simply keeping them in mesh-like material. This allows just enough air to reach the vegetables without drying them out too much. Just remember to use a new pantyhouse/stocking while you do so!
7. Placing Potatoes And Apples Together
Next up, who knew that some of these vegetables are encouraged to mingle with your fruits. Storing your apples and potatoes together will actually lengthen the lifespan of your potatoes to more than 8 weeks!
8. Keeping Avocados Green
If avocado toasts are part of your morning rituals, then you’ll know it’s impossible to keep them green after cutting into them. You can either squirt it with lemon or lime juice, and it’ll be good to go for another day!
9. Separate Your Apples & Oranges
Unlike apples and potatoes, some are sworn enemies of each other, in this case – apples and oranges. Pretty sure, most of us store our fruits all together. Separate your oranges by placing them in mesh bags (and away from apples), will help both fruits last longer.
10. Cucumbers Prefer To Be Alone
Last on this list, is the vegetable we all love in our nasi lemak. Store your cucumbers on a different shelf and away from other veggies and fruits. Cucumbers are basically introverted fruit, where it prefers to be left alone and far away from the rest.
