Upon stepping foot into the cafe, you’ll be greeted by a modern black & white Nanyang ambience which instantly transports you back in time. Coupled with tins of biscuits that resemble those in the past, this cafe blooms with nostalgia.
But the entire cafe still boasts an overall modern and sleek concept with their ceiling-to-floor glass interior. So, the overall concept of the cafe still revolves around a fusion of old-school and modernity at the same time.
Now, let’s get into the most anticipated part of this review, the food! Here at The Blackfast JB, expect to savour Asian cuisines ranging from Nasi Lemak, Nasi Goreng all the way to Laksa.
Serving Malaysian Cuisine At Its Finest
Signature Nasi Lemak with Fried Chicken
Nasi Lemak is Malaysians’ favourite food. And here at The Blackfast, their Nasi Lemak recipe is similar to the one you’ve been eating since childhood. With the fragrant Nasi that’s packed with ‘santan’ and ‘pandan’, it goes extremely well with the spicy Sambal and fried anchovies. Topped with a sunny side up egg and chunks of fried chicken, this plate of Nasi Lemak strives a harmonious blend between traditional and modern.
Signature Mee Siam
Mee Siam is a common item found around Johor so it’s no wonder that there’s a place for Mee Siam here too. Before savouring, don’t forget to squeeze some lime juice and pair the tender noodles with a dollop of homemade sambal.
The Nasi Lemak and Mee Siam come with a side of either plain with egg, egg and fried chicken, egg and otak otak as well as egg and curry chicken. The Curry Chicken comes with a savoury and flavourful curry that pairs well with the tender chicken. Also, the Otak-Otak is so delicate that it gives off a melt-in-your-mouth texture.
JB Style Asam Laksa
Asam Laksa is common in Penang, and is also one of the few favourites among Johoreans. Of course, with its thick Asam broth that’s cooked with fish chunks, the broth alone boasts a tart yet savoury taste. Slices of pineapple, cucumber, mint leaves and red chillies are added to complement the bowl of JB Style Asam Laksa.
Nasi Goreng Tomato
If you love to try something out of the norm, then opt for the Nasi Goreng Tomato which boasts a rather tangy and savoury taste to it. The Nasi Goreng Tomato comes with pieces of crispy fried chicken that pairs well with the main rice dish.

Also, here at The Blackfast, they serve a wide variety of toasts that will leave you drooling. Among the 4 flavours that we tried, the Coconut Cream French Toast is the one that won our hearts. The crispy outer layer of the toast is complemented by the thick layer of coconut cream. And one bite of this french toast will leave you wanting more.
But if you prefer the classic toast, then the Kaya Toast is worth a go as well. The Signature Egg Mayo Toast comes with a generous spread of egg and mayo, making the toast well-suited for those who have tastebuds for all-things creamy
