Greetings, everyone. We know things may be turning for the worse as the amount of cases that tested positive for Covid-19 rose to a staggering 428. At times like this, many of us are still going on with our daily lives and can’t help but to still be in contact with high germ-infested places and items. So, here are lists of places or items you really have to be mindful when handling it every day.
10 High Germ-Infested Items You Have To Look Out For:
1. Petrol Pumps
According to a report by Busbud, it’s reported that petrol pumps actually have 11,000 times more bacteria than the average household toilet seat! Yes, you got that right. Imagine how many people has held the handle without washing their hands prior to pumping petrol.
2. Elevator Buttons
This may very be one of the most common items you touch daily, especially when you stay at condominiums, or work in an office building. Now, we don’t need to do the extreme like using protection over your fingers while pressing on buttons. But, just simply remembering to sanitise or wash your hands immediately after.
3. Escalator Handrails
Just as you imagined, the next thing you should look out for are the escalator handrails, especially when you’re still going to malls. There has been a conscious effort by hypermarkets in disinfecting the handrails constantly. However, it’s always better to take extra precaution.
4. Gym Equipments
Up next, this is one hot and sweaty environment that has a mass amount of people perspiring continuously, which is perfect for bacteria to spread. According to a study, gym equipments such as weights actually have 362 times more germs than your toilet seat. Yikes!
5. ATM Buttons
How could we not include ATM machines that have thousands of people visiting and using constantly every day. In this case, e-Wallets or cards have been encouraged to be used instead during these times. But if you can’t help it, then it’s better to make a constant reminder to wash your hands after handling these ATM machines and the money you take out.
6. Public Transport Handles
Besides that, this may very well be one of the most frequented places that many of us cannot avoid on a daily basis. Thankfully, Rapid KL has been taking care of the rakyat by cleaning and disinfecting public transport carriages from top to bottom since early last month. However, it’s still advised to regularly wash your hands after you’ve ridden any public transport.
7. Public Doors / Entrances
Of course, self-isolation is encouraged at this point in time. But if you had no choice, always remember the items that will be touched by a high volume of people, including opening and closing of public doors.
8. Car Door Knobs
If you’re someone who uses ride-hailing services or taxis on a daily, then you’ll definitely want to take note of this. Public car door handles may have the same amount of germ-infestation as any other kind of handles in trains or buses.
9. Ticketing Machines
All ticketing machines include TnG reload machines, public transport ticketing machine, parking ticket machines and etc. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a touch screen or with buttons, always remember to wash your hands right after!
10. Public Chairs
Last but certainly not least, are the chairs in every public area and transport. Either you’re sitting down at the seating area at the post office or simply just on your way back home, these chairs have high germ-infested with millions of people seated down. However, it’s simply just to remember to practise basic hygiene at these places.

No matter whether you’re out there still grinding away in your job or just going about your daily lives, it’s crucial to always take precautionary steps in these high-risk times. As foodies, always remember to wash your hands for before and after you eat. Always use soap to wash your hands and only use sanitisers when there are no other means of washing your hands.
Here are 5 guided-steps on how to properly wash your hands by CDC:
- Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap.
- Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
- Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice.
- Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.
- Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.
